This cyclonic storm, named ‘Hamoon’ by Iran, derives its name from the Persian word signifying inland desert lakes or marshlands, which are naturally formed seasonal reservoirs in regions adjacent to the Helmand basin.

The IMD’s forecast suggests that Cyclone Hamoon is very likely to intensify further into a ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ (VSCS) over the next six hours. Afterward, it is expected to gradually weaken while moving northeastwards, eventually making landfall on the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong in the evening of October 25th. At this point, it is projected to have a wind speed ranging from 65 to 75 kmph.

Additionally, the IMD has issued a warning regarding turbulent sea conditions, advising fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea until conditions improve.
