Cyclone Hamoon’s Latest Updates
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in an update on Wednesday that Hamoon has turned into a severe cyclonic storm. Around midnight it was located over coastal Bangladesh, centered about 40 km east-southeast of Chittagong.
Hamoon is likely to hit the Bangladesh coast today. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for those living in coastal areas. Also, a warning of heavy rain has been issued in five states including Meghalaya, Assam, and West Bengal.
In the latest information regarding Cyclone Hamon, the Meteorological Department said that the storm is likely to move northeast and weaken into a deep depression within the next six hours.”Cyclonic storm Hamoon over coastal Bangladesh lay centered about 40 km east-southeast of Chittagong (Bangladesh) at 05.30 am IST on October 25. It will move north-eastwards and make landfall in the next 6 hours,” the IMD said in a post on Will weaken over hours.”
Warning for coastal areas
In an earlier update, the IMD had said, “The landfall process has begun. Cyclone Hamoon, moving at a speed of 100 mph, is expected to weaken and cross the Bangladesh coast south of Chittagong within a few hours.” It is expected that during this time the wind speed will be between 80 to 90 km per hour. Anticipating the impact of Cyclone Hamun, coastal districts of Bangladesh have shifted people to safe shelters. As a precautionary measure, instructions have also been issued to suspend cargo handling at Chattogram port and stop transportation to southern Bangladesh.
Alert in the North-Eastern States
A change in the weather has been observed in the Northeastern states for the last two days as the cyclone moved further along its path.IMD has predicted heavy rain at isolated places in Mizoram. Heavy to very heavy rain has been predicted in Tripura on Wednesday. The intensity of rainfall is expected to reduce by October 26. Light to moderate rainfall is likely at a few places across the region.

The weather department has predicted light to moderate rainfall over many areas of South Assam and East Meghalaya and heavy rainfall at isolated places over South Assam on October 24 and 25.IMD has advised fishermen not to go into the sea. It has been said not to go to the northern part of the Bay of Bengal and the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh, and northern Myanmar.
